Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Red were the original two Game Boy video games that ushered in an explosively popular new era of Nintendo franchise mania that continues to this day through new title releases. Before the world was awash in Pikachu pajamas and holographic-foil Charizard cards, an entire millenium before the one in which they eventually ran out of new colors and had to resort to X and Y designations, some of us truly enjoyed Generation 1 for its addictive, in-depth gameplay.
Some of you might be thinking, “A Mario game on the 2600? Surely you jest, good sir! Might it not merely have been a videoed game of the home-brewèd variety?” Well, my learnèd friends, you’d be wrong. Mario Bros. for the 2600 was a port of the original arcade game and is without a doubt the greatest Mario game ever made (besides this one obviously). Here are the top 10 reasons why:
I enjoy the retro gaming community. What follows is ten reasons why, in no particular order.
Disclaimer: This feature is, in no way, something “against” modern gaming. I believe that many in the retro gaming community tend to be very quick to denounce the modern scene, for better or for worse, and may want to jump eagerly to that conclusion. While there are some valid reasons one can dislike any grouping, this top-10 list is intended to be primarily positive and celebratory in tone. Feel free to express opinions in the comments section, though. And one more thing: Inclusion on this list does not preclude exclusion from said list item applying to another group. … In other words: If I say retro gamers are fantastic, that does not mean that nothing else is fantastic, so there is no need to hunt me down with strange accusations.

But seriously, although we always emphasize passion and quality over any desire to get those ever-precious views, the question comes up enough that we agreed this end-of-year exposé would be appropriate.
