History is about to be made this year, at least for a little franchise called Ecco the Dolphin. Ed Annunziatta, Ecco the Dolphin’s creator, has managed to arrange a meeting with Sega for a possible sequel to the 1994 classic, Ecco 2 the Tides of Time. Now you might be asking yourself as a reader, wasn’t the Dreamcast Ecco, Defender of the Future, a squeal to Ecco 2 Tides of Time? Nope, not at all: Defender of the Future is a new Ecco the Dolphin with a whole new story and universe re-imagined by science fiction author David Brin. Ed Annunziatta had no involvement with Defender of the Future whatsoever. Even though Ed is Ecco’s creator, he doesn’t own the rights to the property.
In 2008, Ed Annunziatta had expressed interest in working on a new Ecco the Dolphin for Xbox Live. Since then he had yet to deliver, as he didn’t own the rights, and Sega didn’t want to give them up. Sega has had a stronghold on the copyright of Ecco the Dolphin since the beginning, and for ten years they have yet to do anything with it. A few months ago Ed had approached Sega in hopes of being able to get a license to work on a new Ecco the Dolphin. Sega had no interest in what Ed had in mind, as they were looking for something that catered to the casual gamer, like Angry Birds.
